ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series: MADD3E (ITZ029)

Posted by: noble savage on 07/09/2016 in Featured, Mixes, Music, Releases

ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series highlights the incredibly talented DJs and producers that make up the ITZSOWEEZEE ranks, as well as our extended music family. Each month, we deliver a fresh mix that reflects the diverse style and flavour of our crew. This is an opportunity to “meet” our selectors, enjoy some amazing free music, and understand why we command the respect that we do.

As the ITZSOWEEZEE network continues to expand, so does our reach. Over the past couple of years, we’ve built strong connections across the Atlantic with all types of artists and labels. One such label is the Frankfurt-based Nu Disco Your Disco (NDYD) Records, who have been supplying us with releases from their talented roster for several months now. Previous features have included tracks from the likes of Italian producer BVRGER and Berlin representative Mogul. Two weeks ago, NDYD also gave us the privilege of premiering the latest record by one of Italy’s best-kept-secrets, MADD3E. And now, we have the pleasure of presenting MADD3E’s contribution to our monthly Spotlight Series. This twenty-ninth edition is special, as it serves as the first of back-to-back Spotlight Series releases from NDYD Records!

MADD3E, hailing from Rome, is a producer who is steadily rising in the global ranks for the past year. He has been dropping funky future bass creations with a finesse that is unmatched. His sound has a polish that is lacking from many of his production contemporaries, and this is definitely reflected in his Spotlight Series mix. Throughout the 45-minute affair, MADD3E changes the pace from many of our previous releases, and crafts a soulful blend of music ranging from chill instrumentals to hiphop and R&B, all while maintaining a vibe that is smooth as silk. As the seasons transition from summer to autumn, this is a mix that should most definitely stay in heavy rotation for those of you who simply love to groove.

My name is MADD3E, I regularly get high off music instead of drugs. In my mind this mix could also be run as “ITZSOWEED” for it is very relaxing and gets you high too.

PREMIERE: MadD3E – #TTFU

Posted by: noble savage on 23/08/2016 in Featured, Music

madd3e ttfu

As the summer slowly comes to a close in Toronto, everyone is trying to take advantage of the nice weather with barbecues, patio nights, and great music to dance the night away. On that note, it’s an honour to have the privilege of premiering “#TTFU”, a brand new future bass heater by Italian producer MadD3E that provides the perfect soundtrack to the end of the season. On the track, MadD3E layers melodic piano stabs over a smooth bass bounce, and couples it with just the right amount of hi-hats and vocal samples to flourish. The real highlight of the record, however, comes at 1:50, when the bass moves aside in favour of a beautifully melodic piano solo that’s reminiscent of the work by Kenishiro Nishihara (look him up if you don’t know the name). At 2:35, the track comes full circle with the return of the infectious bounce and adds to it with increasingly stuttered drums. This is a song you’ll want to play as the sun sets, the last few breaths of summer breeze through the air, and the night’s celebrations are in full gear. Trust.

ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series: beat sampras (ITZ028)

ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series highlights the incredibly talented DJs and producers that make up the ITZSOWEEZEE ranks, as well as our extended music family. Each month, we deliver a fresh mix that reflects the diverse style and flavour of our crew. This is an opportunity to “meet” our selectors, enjoy some amazing free music, and understand why we command the respect that we do.

For the past several months, we’ve been outsourcing the Spotlight Series duties to some of our talented friends from across Canada, down south in the U.S., and across the pond in Europe. This month, for the twenty-eighth installment in the series, we turn the spotlight back inwards to showcase one of our very own ITZSOWEEZEE family members – rising Toronto producer beat sampras. We’ve had the honour of knowing sampras for over a decade, and have witnessed the man transition from a simple loop-chopping beatmaker into one hell of a dope producer – one who is quickly becoming one of Toronto’s greatest hidden gems. Last Fall, he dropped remix after remix, culminating in the release of his first official mixtape, appropriately titled The Remixes. Since then, he’s built strong relationships and worked with international talent like Ikaz Boi and Atari Jones, to local artists including Michael Imperial, R&B/pop vocalist TEA, his Bedroomer fam Eytan Tobin and Lum, as well as many others who shall remain a secret (for now).

All of sampras’ hard work has lead him to his first MuchFACT video grant, and he’s been busy creating a series of visuals set to drop soon. On top of that, he’s been in the studio non-stop, putting in work on his official debut EP, which is going to be a serious problem. He’s sprinkled in some exclusives for your ears throughout his hour-long Spotlight Series mix. Full of genre-bending styles, the mix displays why sampras has been steadily accumulating gigs at some of the hottest parties in the city, including his monthly residency, Coast, at The Libertine with ITZSOWEEZEE co-founder DeMiggs. Once only a behind-the-scenes character in Toronto’s music scene, sampras is has grown into one of the most valuable players in the league. To understand why, press play and let beat sampras take you on a smooth-as-silk musical journey – you won’t be disappointed.

My thoughts are:
I don’t know what to say lol
Just hit play

PREMIERE: Dom Dias – Dani Can’t Stop

Posted by: noble savage on 19/07/2016 in Featured, Music

dom dias dani cant stop

Less than two weeks after dropping his stellar remix to “Crush On You” by The Jets, Dom Dias returns to defend his title as one of the hardest working producers in Toronto. On “Dani Can’t Stop”, Dom cooks up a heavy moombahton/trap banger that reworks two classic records by California legends, Red Hot Chili Peppers. Light rain transforms into a torrential downpour as the guitar licks from “Can’t Stop” are blended over Dom’s signature drums, eventually making way for the warped vocals from “Californication” and an electronic menagerie of bass, stuttering synths, and air horns. The drums pound back in to complete the frenetic tribal vibe, and just like that, Dom returns for round two of the build-up and drop in this high-octane, genre-bending track. It’s like he’s reminding all of us that he’s been steadily climbing the ranks and can’t stop until he’s the king of the jungle. Be sure to catch Dom as he plays alongside Tropkillaz and OSKI this Friday, July 22nd, at The Hoxton (69 Bathurst St, Toronto). For more information, check out the Facebook event page.

PREMIERE: The Jets – Crush On You (Dom Dias Remix)

Posted by: noble savage on 06/07/2016 in Featured, Music

dom dias the jets crush on you

Another month, another Dom Dias remix… After blessing us with his excellent remix of “Feeling Good” by Nina Simone, the hardest working producer in Toronto returns with a tropical remix to The Jets’ 1986 classic, “Crush On You”. The track, beginning with the sounds of a rain shower, instantly brings to mind a sweltering, humid, and sticky day like those we’ve been having in the city lately. Forty seconds in, the snarl of a tiger leads into a slowed down sample of Elizabeth Wolfgramm’s hook, layered over a hazy instrumental. The funk breakdown near the middle of the track is a reminder that even in the summer heat, there’s always time to get up and dance. Overall, it’s a fun rework of an old-time favourite, and it’s meant to be enjoyed after a few too many mojitos with your l’amour du jour. Kudos to Dom for always bringing something different and enjoyable to the table, and for allowing us to share his creations with the world.

ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series: Jayemkayem (ITZ027)

Posted by: noble savage on 29/06/2016 in Featured, Mixes, Music, Releases

sls itz027 800x800

ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series highlights the incredibly talented DJs and producers that make up the ITZSOWEEZEE ranks, as well as our extended music family. Each month, we deliver a fresh mix that reflects the diverse style and flavour of our crew. This is an opportunity to “meet” our selectors, enjoy some amazing free music, and understand why we command the respect that we do.

To many audiophiles, one of the greatest feelings in the world is to connect with someone over a shared respect for music and sounds. In fact, many of us in the ITZSO fam first bonded through the love of sounds, sheesha, and video games in 2004, well before the thoughts of ITZSOWEEZEE were even conceived. The key was that we met, experienced music together, and became lifelong friends. In this age of social media, on-demand entertainment, and disposable gratification, it’s become increasingly rare to meet someone and feel that instant spark of acknowledgement and je ne sais quois that leads to stating “yea, you really get this music thing.” Enter Jayemkayem, a Calgary-to-Toronto transplant who has immediately become a staple in our city’s music scene. Always greeting people with a big smile, cracking jokes, and spreading her knowledge of music and culture, Jayemkayem is one of those souls that you have to befriend on sight. Everything about this woman is an embodiment of understanding music, creating good vibes, and leaving a positive aura in any room she plays. It’s an honour to have her bless us with the twenty-seventh edition of our Spotlight Series.

Jayemkayem is an accomplished club DJ, freelance writer (see her work on Hypebeast, Noisey, Thump, and more) and also hosts her own online radio show, Hundreds&Thousands. She plays some of the hottest venues in the city on the regular, steadily adding to her growing fan base. When she’s not working on her own music, you can catch her at almost any event where DJs coalesce, soaking up the experiences that other like-minded people have to offer. To sum her up in one sentence is difficult, but we’ll attempt to do so: Jayemkayem is a walking encyclopedia of sound. The results of all of her dedication to the craft are on full display in her Spotlight Series mix. Throughout the hour-long mix, she modernizes the “wall-of-sound” concept, championed by Phil Spector, Brian Wilson, and many other ’60s-era legends, by applying it to considerably younger genres like grime, future bass, and UK garage. Similar to how Spector and Wilson would layer multiple arrangements of instruments over one another, Jayemkayem layers songs on top of songs to create a lush and energetic blend of acoustics that is something altogether new and refreshing. It really deserves multiple listens to understand and appreciate, but this may be one of the greatest contributions to the series thus far. Thank you Jo, for real.

A DJ I always looked up to for their mixtapes is Neil Armstrong. His mixes were always fresh – usually a dope theme or concept and heavy on blends and extended mixes. This mix is a bunch of music I’ve been feeling lately. I hope that people will hear some different sounds, as well as not quite know whether they are hearing 1, 2 or 3 songs at some points.

Thanks for the opportunity to do this. I had a lot of fun making this 🙂

PREMIERE: Nina Simone – Feeling Good (Dom Dias Remix)

Posted by: noble savage on 13/06/2016 in Featured, Music

dom dias nina simone feeling good remix

Exactly four weeks after letting us premiere his excellent remix to “Pon De Replay” by Rihanna, Toronto producer Dom Dias returns with another exclusive. His latest offering is a hard-hitting remix to Nina Simone’s 1965 classic, “Feeling Good”. The track is a departure from the Afrobeat and Caribbean-tinged heaters that Dom has been cooking up lately. Showing off his versatility as a producer, Dom breathes new life and poignancy into the airy vocals, layering them over brooding piano stabs and a heavy horn section while still maintaining the soul of the original record. Stream it below and keep a look out for more of Dom’s music as the summer continues.
