ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series highlights the incredibly talented DJs and producers that make up the ITZSOWEEZEE ranks, as well as our extended music family. Each month, we deliver a fresh mix that reflects the diverse style and flavour of our crew. This is an opportunity to “meet” our selectors, enjoy some amazing free music, and understand why we command the respect that we do.

To many audiophiles, one of the greatest feelings in the world is to connect with someone over a shared respect for music and sounds. In fact, many of us in the ITZSO fam first bonded through the love of sounds, sheesha, and video games in 2004, well before the thoughts of ITZSOWEEZEE were even conceived. The key was that we met, experienced music together, and became lifelong friends. In this age of social media, on-demand entertainment, and disposable gratification, it’s become increasingly rare to meet someone and feel that instant spark of acknowledgement and je ne sais quois that leads to stating “yea, you really get this music thing.” Enter Jayemkayem, a Calgary-to-Toronto transplant who has immediately become a staple in our city’s music scene. Always greeting people with a big smile, cracking jokes, and spreading her knowledge of music and culture, Jayemkayem is one of those souls that you have to befriend on sight. Everything about this woman is an embodiment of understanding music, creating good vibes, and leaving a positive aura in any room she plays. It’s an honour to have her bless us with the twenty-seventh edition of our Spotlight Series.

Jayemkayem is an accomplished club DJ, freelance writer (see her work on Hypebeast, Noisey, Thump, and more) and also hosts her own online radio show, Hundreds&Thousands. She plays some of the hottest venues in the city on the regular, steadily adding to her growing fan base. When she’s not working on her own music, you can catch her at almost any event where DJs coalesce, soaking up the experiences that other like-minded people have to offer. To sum her up in one sentence is difficult, but we’ll attempt to do so: Jayemkayem is a walking encyclopedia of sound. The results of all of her dedication to the craft are on full display in her Spotlight Series mix. Throughout the hour-long mix, she modernizes the “wall-of-sound” concept, championed by Phil Spector, Brian Wilson, and many other ’60s-era legends, by applying it to considerably younger genres like grime, future bass, and UK garage. Similar to how Spector and Wilson would layer multiple arrangements of instruments over one another, Jayemkayem layers songs on top of songs to create a lush and energetic blend of acoustics that is something altogether new and refreshing. It really deserves multiple listens to understand and appreciate, but this may be one of the greatest contributions to the series thus far. Thank you Jo, for real.

A DJ I always looked up to for their mixtapes is Neil Armstrong. His mixes were always fresh – usually a dope theme or concept and heavy on blends and extended mixes. This mix is a bunch of music I’ve been feeling lately. I hope that people will hear some different sounds, as well as not quite know whether they are hearing 1, 2 or 3 songs at some points.

Thanks for the opportunity to do this. I had a lot of fun making this 🙂

PREMIERE: Nina Simone – Feeling Good (Dom Dias Remix)

Posted by: noble savage on 13/06/2016 in Featured, Music

dom dias nina simone feeling good remix

Exactly four weeks after letting us premiere his excellent remix to “Pon De Replay” by Rihanna, Toronto producer Dom Dias returns with another exclusive. His latest offering is a hard-hitting remix to Nina Simone’s 1965 classic, “Feeling Good”. The track is a departure from the Afrobeat and Caribbean-tinged heaters that Dom has been cooking up lately. Showing off his versatility as a producer, Dom breathes new life and poignancy into the airy vocals, layering them over brooding piano stabs and a heavy horn section while still maintaining the soul of the original record. Stream it below and keep a look out for more of Dom’s music as the summer continues.

ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series: Triv (ITZ026)

ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series highlights the incredibly talented DJs and producers that make up the ITZSOWEEZEE ranks, as well as our extended music family. Each month, we deliver a fresh mix that reflects the diverse style and flavour of our crew. This is an opportunity to “meet” our selectors, enjoy some amazing free music, and understand why we command the respect that we do.

Here at ITZSOWEEZEE, we pride ourselves in our ability to find hidden talent. Whether we’re discovering new sounds through our own digging, music submissions, word-of-mouth, or meeting artists in person – we believe our tastemakers have some of the sharpest ears in the game. And, if you’re a fan of the crew and this website, you most likely agree. It’s with that sense of pride that we present the twenty-sixth edition of our Spotlight Series, brought to you by up-and-coming Milwaukee producer, Triv.

Triv, a self-proclaimed beat cooker, has been cheffing and serving up tracks via SoundCloud for just over twelve months. His music came to the attention of ITZSOWEEZEE co-founder DeMiggs earlier this year, and we were all instantly hooked on his lush and soulful future bass creations. Inspired by Soulection O.G.s like Sango, Dpat, and Atu, Triv released his If Only EP in the Spring, and has followed that project up with some beautifully produced originals (see “What About Us”) and remixes (see “Trust Me”). DeMiggs reached out to Triv almost immediately to lock him in for a Spotlight Series mix, and the result is nothing short of phenomenal. The song selection alone will make you want to keep this mix in heavy rotation, if not on permanent repeat. The release was slightly delayed, due to Triv having to address some personal matters – but we’re happy that he’s coping well, and are stoked that he was able to channel his negative energy into a creation that’s so positive. This mix lends credence to the belief that human beings often produce some of their best work while facing adversity.

I made this mix two days after a really tough breakup. It represents the roller-coaster of emotions I’ve experienced recently. Anxiety, depression, and heartbreak have been kicking my ass lately, and the music in this collection communicates these feelings better than I ever could with words. The assembly of this mix was extremely therapeutic for me and I hope it helps someone else who is also going through some tough times. No matter what happens in my life, music will always be there to make me feel better. Thank you for listening.

PREMIERE: Rihanna – Pon De Replay (Dom Dias Remix)

Posted by: noble savage on 16/05/2016 in Featured, Music

dom dias rihanna pon de replay remix

If Toronto gave out awards to the hardest-working producers in Toronto, then Dom Dias would definitely be on the short list. In just over a month, the rising star has released multiple remixes, all of which are certified dance floor heaters. His latest release, which we’re blessed to premiere today, breathes new life into Rihanna’s debut single, “Pon De Replay”. Before Rihanna morphed into her BadGirlRiri persona, she was a humble 17 year-old from Barbados and an emerging talent in the Jay-Z-helmed Def Jam roster. On this remix, Dom, who is well-versed in Caribbean/Afrobeat sounds, returns Rihanna to her roots, while adding a huge dose of his signature big-room bass. The result is a track that has the potential to be played at parties of all sizes, from traditional sweaty dance halls to massive open-air music festivals. We’ll say this much right now – the scene is Dom Dias’ for the taking – we’re just thrilled to be along for the ride. Stream the remix below and revisit Dom’s contribution to the ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series in our previous post.

ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series: Star.One (ITZ025)

ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series highlights the incredibly talented DJs and producers that make up the ITZSOWEEZEE ranks, as well as our extended music family. Each month, we deliver a fresh mix that reflects the diverse style and flavour of our crew. This is an opportunity to “meet” our selectors, enjoy some amazing free music, and understand why we command the respect that we do.

For the twenty-fifth edition in the series, we are extremely blessed to share with you a mix from the mandem across the pond – UK producers, Star.One. Star. One are a sibling duo consisting of Blackz and Phaze, two London artists who have been making a name for themselves with their hard-hitting grime, UKG, jungle, and drum & bass creations. In 2014, they released their Elements mixtape, featuring UK emcees such as D Double E, Creed MC, G Frsh, P Money, and more, garnering the respect of established industry insiders and leading to support from prominent tastemakers through the BBC Music Introducing platform. Already in 2016, Star. One have released a massive remix of Section Boyz’ smash hit, “Lock Arf”, and just last week, we featured their new single, “Original Badman”, in collaboration with Jamaican superstar Agent Sasco (Assassin) and Zimbabwean hit-maker Takura. Now, the brothers use our Spotlight Series as a platform to showcase their ridiculous skills as touring DJs, with a 40-minute mix that is meant to destroy rave sound systems around the world. The energy level on this mix is through the roof, and it deserves to be played at high volume all summer long. We dare you not to get out of your seat from the moment you press play until the moment the mix fades out. Rate this. Trust.

We were getting ready for a club show over the weekend and recorded this mix as a preparation for the kind of stuff we were going to play that night, so it’s a mix of UKG, Grime, Jungle and Bass.

PREMIERE: Drake – One Dance (Dom Dias Remix)

Posted by: noble savage on 25/04/2016 in Featured, Music

dom dias drake one dance remix

Exactly two weeks ago, Toronto producer Dom Dias let us premiere his stellar remix of “Holdin’ On To Me” by NGHTMRE. Now, as if he was worried people would start calling him lazy, the Sinhalese sensation delivers one of the best remixes of Drake’s reggae-tinged “One Dance” that I’ve heard since the Views track was released earlier this month. Looping the sweet Kyla vocal sample and layering it over a wobbly, tropical, moombahton bassline, Dom transforms the track into a full blown heater – something that should, and will, be played at parties all summer long. I can already picture dance floors erupting into a slow wining groove as soon as the chorus hits. Stream this track below and stop sleeping on Toronto mans like Dom Dias for real.

PREMIERE: NGHTMRE – Holdin’ On To Me (Dom Dias Remix)

Posted by: noble savage on 11/04/2016 in Featured, Music

dom dias nghtmre holdin on to me remix

Rising Toronto producer Dom Dias has given us the honour of premiering his latest track – a house/trap remix of “Holdin’ On To Me” by Los Angeles’ NGHTMRE. You may remember Dom from his high-octane contribution to our Spotlight Series back in December, as well as his recently released coolMINTep, which we shared with you all earlier this month. On his current remix, Dom transforms NGHTMRE’s smooth future bass original into a heater that has the potential to set dance floors on fire, elegantly switching between a grooving house bass line and a melodic, yet heavy, trap drop. The track also serves as Dom’s contribution to Mad Decent and Wavo’s remix competition – the winner will be featured on Mad Decent, and may also be considered for an official label release. So, do yourselves a favour by taking a listen below, and do Dom a favour by voting for him in the contest.

PREMIERE: beat sampras – said it

Posted by: noble savage on 09/04/2016 in Featured, Music

beat sampras said it

Toronto producer beat sampras (ITZSOWEEZEE/Bedroomer) has been hard at work for the past several months, dropping a fresh mixtape called The Remixes in November, DJing at the flyest parties in the city, as well as recently releasing his SXSW 2016 Mix less than a month ago. And now, he’s gearing up to release a brand new EP in the summer. “said it” is the first offering from the EP – a smooth-as-fuck instrumental flip of Rihanna’s sexual slow jam “Yeah, I Said It”. Featuring a chopped and screwed sample, with an unsubtle addition of drums, bass, and keys, the track is perfectly suited to driving slow through the city lights or some aphroditic activities with your amour. Stream the track below and definitely grab the free download via Bandcamp.

Follow beat sampras on: SoundCloud | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

P.S. Make sure you come out to The Libertine (1307 Dundas St W, Toronto) tonight to catch beat sampras live alongside ITZSOWEEZEE co-founder DeMiggs at Coast. You don’t want to miss this one – trust me.
