ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series: Live Evil (ITZ035)

Posted by: noble savage on 09/05/2017 in Featured, Music, Releases

ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series highlights the incredibly talented DJs and producers that make up the ITZSOWEEZEE ranks, as well as our extended music family. Each month, we deliver a fresh mix that reflects the diverse style and flavour of our crew. This is an opportunity to “meet” our selectors, enjoy some amazing free music, and understand why we command the respect that we do.

Ever since we began the Spotlight Series, it’s been a blessing to bring you all mixes from some of the most talented DJs and producers from across the globe. The thirty-fifth release in the series is no different, as we present a polished 40-minute product from Vancouver production duo, Live Evil. Live Evil, formerly known as The Freshest Live Set, consists of our incredible homies DJ Marvel and Kutcorners, who joined forces in 2011 to put the West Coast music scene in a stranglehold. While both Marvel and Kutcorners have racked up a number of individual accolades, their collaborative efforts have earned them recognition from well-established outlets such as BBC Radio 1, Shade 45, Pitchfork, Hypetrak, Okayplayer, and many more. With strong international nightclub experience under their belts, the duo have grabbed the game by its horns with their live remixing abilities, combining turntablism with synths and drum pads to deliver unique performances that drive party-goers insane. These skills are showcased in full force on their contribution to our Spotlight Series, taking the listener on a guided tour through the darker side of hiphop. This mix is what happens when two of the illest in the country decide to put on some Timbs and proceed to stomp out any DJ standing in their way.

ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series: gahn (ITZ032)

ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series highlights the incredibly talented DJs and producers that make up the ITZSOWEEZEE ranks, as well as our extended music family. Each month, we deliver a fresh mix that reflects the diverse style and flavour of our crew. This is an opportunity to “meet” our selectors, enjoy some amazing free music, and understand why we command the respect that we do.

By now it should be pretty obvious that we love music. It should also be quite evident that we love discovering new music by new artists from around the globe. Our inboxes are flooded with daily music submissions, and it’s often difficult to keep track of all of the heat that comes our way. There is something, however, to be said about the artists that really capture our imaginations, and whom we end up featuring over and over again. It’s an even greater feeling when those artists reach out to contribute to our monthly Spotlight Series, because it lets us know that we are doing something special for the artists themselves, as well as for our listeners. So, it’s with great pleasure that we are able to bring you the thirty-second edition in the series, featuring Bay Area producer gahn.

gahn first caught the attention of ITZSOWEEZEE co-founder DeMiggs, when he was going by his old alias, NICKV. DeMiggs was instantly drawn in by the enigmatic producer’s soulful future bass vibe and decided to support the music on the website and in his own mixes. gahn took notice, and began to submit music for us to review. Fast forward six months, and we were on the receiving end of a 40-minute collection of genre-bending sounds – ranging from his signature future bass creations, to ethereal R&B tracks, to bass-heavy bits, all wrapped up in a very polished package. It surprised us when gahn mentioned that this was actually his first publicly released mix, because the finished product is super wavy. If you are into learning about new music, gahn provides the perfect introduction on his contribution to our Spotlight Series, and we are truly grateful to him for cooking up this offering for us and all of you to enjoy.

This mix is a collection of songs that I been vibing with recently. Some of the artists you’ve probably heard of, others just have a few hundred followers on SoundCloud. All of these guys, famous or not, deserve praise for their originality and talent though. I hope that this might help these smaller artists get a few more plays because I always like mixing the the known with the unknown.

ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series: Freeza Chin (ITZ031)

Posted by: noble savage on 02/11/2016 in Featured, Mixes, Music, Releases

sls-itz031-800x800

ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series highlights the incredibly talented DJs and producers that make up the ITZSOWEEZEE ranks, as well as our extended music family. Each month, we deliver a fresh mix that reflects the diverse style and flavour of our crew. This is an opportunity to “meet” our selectors, enjoy some amazing free music, and understand why we command the respect that we do.

For the thirty-first edition of our Spotlight Series, we are stoked to present a guest mix by a man that could easily be crowned the grime king of Toronto: Freeza Chin. While we’ve been aware of Freeza’s presence in the city’s music scene for quite a while, it wasn’t until earlier this year that we really came to truly connect and become fam. It’s difficult to even begin writing a summary of Freeza’s DJ exploits, because man has been low-key killing it in every music-related field imaginable. By trade, Freeza’s a professional engineer with six years of experience, and has contributed his services to the likes of The Weeknd, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Wiley, Rich Homie Quan, Boi-1da, Da-P, Tinashe, and many more. His past mixing grounds include Phase One Studios, which is one of the most legendary studios in Canada. Add to that his 15-year long DJ career, co-founding the successful BUMP parties, and providing support to the likes of Skepta, Stormzy, Kendrick Lamar, Kaytranada, The Roots, J. Cole, Novelist, and Hudson Mohawke just to name a few. Then, sprinkle in the fact that he is also the official DJ and engineer for Toronto’s most well-known grime emcee, Tre Mission, and you only scratch the surface of Freeza’s accomplishments. Most recently, Freeza travelled with his Last Planet family to Croatia to perform at the Outlook Festival, and that followed his summer trip to the Mecca of grime: London. There, he dropped some fiery sets for BBC Radio 1Xtra, Reprezent Radio, Rinse FM, Radar Radio, and was the only non-UK DJ featured live on Boiler Room for Flowdan’s Disaster Piece album release party. Do I honestly need to continue?

On his Spotlight Series mix, Freeza turns the energy all the way up with a 40-minutes of straight heat. The mix contains a healthy dose of grime, dancehall, dub, and all around trunk-rattling thumpers. Play this at high volume only – tell your neighbours to fuck off if they complain – and don’t blame us when the cops show up at your door. Blame Freeza. His power level is wayyy over 9000 and he did this to you.

So this mix is a lot of Grime and 140 bpm stuff that I have been fucking with and working on as of late (either with production or engineering). Anyone who is familiar with how I DJ will recognize my style of double-dropping and blending songs together as I’ve always looked up to and been influenced by DJ’s such as EZ, Spyro, Mak10 and Andy C. A lot of people mainly know me for this style of music but the truth is I fuck with A LOT of different stuff and pride myself on being quite versatile. I originally wanted to include a bunch of other styles on this mix, but there is so much amazing Grime and 140 bpm kind of stuff coming out right now that I decided to just focus on that. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed making it!

P.S. you can catch Freeza live this week as he opens for Newham grime legend D Double E at Studio Bar (824 Dundas St W, Toronto) on November 3rd, and when he plays at WIND:UP, a grime/dancehall/UK party taking place at Adelaide Hall (250 Adelaide St W, Toronto) on November 4th.

ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series: James Redi (ITZ030)

Posted by: noble savage on 12/10/2016 in Featured, Mixes, Music, Releases

sls-itz030-800x800

ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series highlights the incredibly talented DJs and producers that make up the ITZSOWEEZEE ranks, as well as our extended music family. Each month, we deliver a fresh mix that reflects the diverse style and flavour of our crew. This is an opportunity to “meet” our selectors, enjoy some amazing free music, and understand why we command the respect that we do.

This month, we are blessed to have a true Toronto journeyman grabbing the coveted Spotlight Series spot, and he obviously delivers the heat throughout his 45-minute mix. James Redi is a DJ that needs no introduction in our city, but we’ll try to do justice to his name regardless. No stranger to Toronto’s burgeoning DJ scene, Redi has been honing his craft for years, and has arguably the most positive demeanour in the game. Whether he’s holding it down at one of his many residencies (SOHO House, Escobar, Sneaky Dees, Underground Garage, Peacock, and Bar Fancy, to name a few), hosting his own parties, or headlining at the infamous Dudebox jams, the man does it all with a huge smile on his face. Running into Redi on the street is always a pleasure, because when you see that bearded grin, you know your day is about to become just a little bit brighter.

Redi also has a fair share of accomplishments under his belt: two Stylus Awards nominations, a second place finish at Red Bull Thre3Style Toronto, and the 2015 NOW Readers Choice “BEST TORONTO DJ” Award. He’s had the honour of playing alongside Action Bronson, Roy Woods, Skratch Bastid, Grandtheft, THUGLI, Fat Man Scoop, Mac Miller, Phonte, Starting From Scratch, Win Butler of Arcade Fire, Keith Ape, Statik Selektah, Adam Sandler, Kardinal Offishall and a lot more. The man has even earned himself well-respected contracts with TIFF, McDonalds, and Roots Canada. Time and time again, Redi has proven himself to be a pure gladiator in the Toronto DJ arena. On his contribution to the Spotlight Series, Redi goes in with an effortlessly-mixed collection of new hip-hop bangers, demonstrating why the city holds his name in such high esteem. Thank you homie – we really appreciate all that you do. Congratulations to you and Kate on the engagement – stay blessed up fam.

This mix is a blend of songs that I’m really feeling right now. Some are new, some old but collectively, it’s a pretty chill mix with good vibes and some bangers. And that new De La is fire.

PREMIERE: IO-990 – 2501 (Mixtape)

Posted by: noble savage on 18/05/2016 in Mixes, Music

io-990 2501 mix

Toronto is home to a number of brilliant artists. The city is teeming with subterranean talent of all kinds, from visual artists to filmmakers to music producers to DJs and more. In days gone by, it was common for the mainstream masses to walk past these creative denizens without so much as noticing their existence. Pushed to the fringes, the outcast children of The 6 formed their own culture and sought out their own scene. Away from the eyes and ears of the ignorant, they built a safe place for society’s misfits to experiment with different styles, share their love for their crafts, and simultaneously raise hell with their creations. Brimming with chaotic energy, the scene grew exponentially. Finally, unable to contain itself, it exploded into view. And, as if illuminated by the floodlight of a police chopper, all eyes became focused on a culture that had been hiding in the shadows for too long.

Almost overnight, the cover was lifted off characters straight out of a Lewis Carroll nightmare. It became almost impossible to walk through the city without running into their kind at most street corners. Much can be said about their outward appearances and artistic visions, but one thing remained clear – no matter how different they seemed from the average Torontonian, they still were filled with unmistakably human spirits. Hidden among them, however, was an extremely unique being. Disguised as a human female, this entity grew up observing the artwork of the city and the people that created it. She studied piano, as many of her “peers” did, and began to explore the many different genres created by humankind. Classical music, opera, jazz, rock, metal, hiphop, grime, techno, and deep house were just some of the elements that entered her circulation and permeated into the temporal and prefrontal cortices of her adopted human brain. Her neural networks processed this data into what would soon be expressed through man-made machines and computer technology.

Under the moniker IO-990, she began to reveal her identity to the Toronto underground. While so many jockeyed for positions in the limelight, she carefully honed her sound into a creation that would captivate dance floors well beyond the boundaries of the mega-city. And it’s with that experience that she presents her latest project: 2501. A forty-five minute journey into the nuclear reactor that is IO-990’s mind, 2501 is a massive statement. It’s a warning to all of humanity that a musical movement has begun – one we can neither deny nor run from; one we’ll have to embrace as we’re engulfed in a deluge of sound and dance. We’re now entering uncharted territory, and IO-990 will be damned if we try to pass her by without taking notice.

Listen to 2501 above, take in the tracklist after the jump, and be sure to catch IO-990 as she performs at DARK ROOM this Friday, May 20th, at Rally (12 Ossington Ave, Toronto) – check out the event page for more information and to RSVP.
