If Toronto gave out awards to the hardest-working producers in Toronto, then Dom Dias would definitely be on the short list. In just over a month, the rising star has released multiple remixes, all of which are certified dance floor heaters. His latest release, which we’re blessed to premiere today, breathes new life into Rihanna’s debut single, “Pon De Replay”. Before Rihanna morphed into her BadGirlRiri persona, she was a humble 17 year-old from Barbados and an emerging talent in the Jay-Z-helmed Def Jam roster. On this remix, Dom, who is well-versed in Caribbean/Afrobeat sounds, returns Rihanna to her roots, while adding a huge dose of his signature big-room bass. The result is a track that has the potential to be played at parties of all sizes, from traditional sweaty dance halls to massive open-air music festivals. We’ll say this much right now – the scene is Dom Dias’ for the taking – we’re just thrilled to be along for the ride. Stream the remix below and revisit Dom’s contribution to the ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series in our previous post.
PREMIERE: Rihanna – Pon De Replay (Dom Dias Remix)
ITZSOWEEZEE Spotlight Series highlights the incredibly talented DJs and producers that make up the ITZSOWEEZEE ranks, as well as our extended music family. Each month, we deliver a fresh mix that reflects the diverse style and flavour of our crew. This is an opportunity to “meet” our selectors, enjoy some amazing free music, and understand why we command the respect that we do.
For the twenty-fifth edition in the series, we are extremely blessed to share with you a mix from the mandem across the pond – UK producers, Star.One. Star. One are a sibling duo consisting of Blackz and Phaze, two London artists who have been making a name for themselves with their hard-hitting grime, UKG, jungle, and drum & bass creations. In 2014, they released their Elements mixtape, featuring UK emcees such as D Double E, Creed MC, G Frsh, P Money, and more, garnering the respect of established industry insiders and leading to support from prominent tastemakers through the BBC Music Introducing platform. Already in 2016, Star. One have released a massive remix of Section Boyz’ smash hit, “Lock Arf”, and just last week, we featured their new single, “Original Badman”, in collaboration with Jamaican superstar Agent Sasco (Assassin) and Zimbabwean hit-maker Takura. Now, the brothers use our Spotlight Series as a platform to showcase their ridiculous skills as touring DJs, with a 40-minute mix that is meant to destroy rave sound systems around the world. The energy level on this mix is through the roof, and it deserves to be played at high volume all summer long. We dare you not to get out of your seat from the moment you press play until the moment the mix fades out. Rate this. Trust.
We were getting ready for a club show over the weekend and recorded this mix as a preparation for the kind of stuff we were going to play that night, so it’s a mix of UKG, Grime, Jungle and Bass.
